Hilarious

I'm probably not the right audience for this book. I like humor that is observational, situational or self-referencing, but don't care for insult humor or pranks. Race Me in a Lobster Suit is a set of 29 pranks, where advertising copywriter Mahon placed fake ads asking for help with absurd tasks, stringing responders along with escalating oddness until they finally dropped out.A couple of these, in isolation, might be funny, but after a dozen or so I was just annoyed. That Mahon felt safe in scamming random people, hiding behind the anonymity of email, was evident from her mention in the Introduction of her trepidation at buying a "burner phone" to actually TALK with one of her victims (that exchange did not make it into the book.)If you're one of the people who enjoyed the TV show "Punk'd", then maybe you'll like this book. It wasn't for me.

So I work in radio as a morning show host. We do prank phone calls and lots of different entertaining stunts on our show. We are always looking for ways to think of new ideas for our show. When I saw this book, "Race Me in a Lobster Suit" I hoped it would have some ideas that I could use to spark the creative juices and get them flowing.I was not let down. I wasn't looking for something that I could "steal," but I was hoping that this would be a book that would be full of thought-starters and basis for stunts we could do. Whether it is posing nude with Komodo dragons or selling (giving away) a mattress because grandpa used it for unmentionable things, there are some creative ideas in the book.I'm knocking one star for the (in my opinion) un-necessarily raunchy humor that is used too often in the book. Working in radio, I've learned that "working blue" (aka - using sex/raunchiness) to get laughs is about a MILLION times easier than working clean. Part of jokes, humor and being funny is shocking people or surprising them. It is much easier to shock people or surprise them when you go to places that most people don't talk about. What is challenging it being funny without doing that. Then you have to be really clever and creative. You find a funny, clean comedian and they are more clever than a comedian that drops sex and poop jokes the whole time. This book goes there far too often. Also, there are a lot of the pranks that seem over the top to me - I'm surprised anyone would go along with them when it gets TOO ridiculous. That's another fine line - believability. Let's face it, someone could write a book like this and make up both sides if they wanted to do so - what makes it funny is if they buy the story and really believe it. Some of these left me wondering if we weren't being pranked on the whole thing.I hope not. I enjoyed the premise of this book a great deal. It is classic prank entertainment in a day where you can watch it by the brainload on the internet all day long, so it is nice to think of it being available in book-form.I'm going to be generous and go with a 3.5 stars rounded up. If I were recommending this book to a friend, I think it would make a great Christmas gift - sort of a stocking stuffer idea or a good gift for that friend who is always being funny or pulling pranks. You'll know who would like it. It is well laid out and it looks very professionally done. I hope they do a followup and maybe try to keep it a little cleaner and less over-the-top at times.

I'm a fan of absurd humor. Like many people my age, I grew up thinking Monty Python was the pinnacle of funny. This book has some of those sensibilities, but perhaps carried to a slightly sadistic extreme at times. Think something closer to Borat by e-mail. It's not that I'm able to suspend my disbelief and find the correspondences described in the book as complete and accurate. I assume it's been edited, embellished, and tightened up. But sometimes, I just feel a little sorry for the characters in the book.I think what it needs is just a bit of conscience or heart. I'm not a comedian, so perhaps that would kill the humor. I don't know. But I don't want to feel sorry for people when reading what is essentially a bathroom book. This is the author's first book, and she's funny and has a great idea here, and the concept is very urban -- meaning, I think it will appeal most to people who have encountered and known a diversity of people. Perhaps it needs some polish along with conscience. A better editor might have helped.Still, there are many bits in here that are funny and thought provoking, and I look forward to reading her next book.

Kelly Mahon, the author of "Race Me in a Lobster Suit" decided to write fake ads and post them online She never expected to get any answers. But she was wrong - she did get some long involved answers. The title story is about the result of an ad to race M's Mahon in her apartment while dressed in a lobster suit M's Mahon would provide the lobster suit, complete with blood stain, to the ad answerer. Sounds like a dream date, doesn't it? M's Mahon promises to set the scene in her apartment with seaweed, clams, "stuff to spread all over". I can't begin to imagine what the person who answered the ad thought, but he/she wanted to bring a friend along. It just becomes crazier and crazier. And that's how these stories go. Ms Mahoo sn sets up an extremely strange ad, people answer it and she documents how the prank plays out. She is smart enough not to meet any of the people in real life. She is also cautious enough to acquire a burner phone to use while interacting with her, ah, new friends. Some people play along and some people suspect they are being pranked. But no one(animal, mineral or vegetable) is harmed or loses any money in these pranks.I would be doing the book a huge disservice by not mentioning Graham Annable's quirky illustrations. They really convey the humor of the stories in just a few lines. The knitted cocoon is a particular favorite of mine.If you want to have a quick silly read, "Race Me in a Lobster Suit" is the book for you. You could use it as a gift to cheer somebody up. I strongly recommend "Race Me in a Lobster Suit" for those who have a sense of humor.
