Book came to me with the cover a little dirty just bc it’s a white cover. Other than that great content

Interesting but can be repetitious in some places.

A very good with considerable information and what seemed to me very original ideas. I got the impression that some of them were fanciful

A concise, detailed, easy to understand and navigate electronic book by one of the top sleep specialists in the world. Dr. Kryger, the first doctor to diagnose sleep apnea in North America, is a superb clinician as well as an academic and researcher. He is also the editor of the principal textbook on sleep medicine used in medical schools throughout North America.

Very nice review.

If you're wanting to learn about the medical perspective of sleep, such as sleep studies, medical interventions for sleep issues, etc. & you're not a medical provider than this is a pretty good book for you. There are some general interest comments about sleep but for the most part it is very medically focused. There definitely is a lot of really good information in this book that might alleviate some folks concerns regarding sleep and health, such as the fact that 8 hours of sleep is an average - some folks need less and others more, the average person looking for a general book on sleep may not be seeking such a strong medical focus. (Although since it's written by an MD it should make some folks expect the medical focus).I was disappointed that there wasn't really a sociological/historical/cultural section or aspect to the book, as that can be very relevant for folks today. He does mention that folks tended to go to sleep when it was dark and rise when the sun came up pre-electricity. However, there is much more to the social/cultural aspects of sleep than just that.I do like that he addresses lack of sleep and how that can make mood, depression and mental health issues worse, as well as stress and worry can impact the quality of your sleep so that a person can get caught in a cycle where the lack of sleep impacts the mood and the mood decreases the amount and quality of sleep. I think this is important for folks to know. One historical fact that I wish he'd included is the fact that we've not always slept solid through the night and night waking can be normal for some folks. Historically we've had first and second sleep, meaning you sleep for several hours then awake for a few hours in the night (say from 1am - 3am for example) then go back to sleep for several more hours. This was understood as normal in many cultures in the past and many people would even get together and visit during that night-waking time. I've found that telling people (who are worried about their night waking) about the history of first and second sleep can help normalize their night waking for them and really reduce their stress and worry. Often they can then adjust their routines to expect it and be okay with it. It doesn't always last long-term and can be for just a few weeks or months ( some people may go back and forth between this and regular "through the night" sleeping). Often folks are more likely to have night waking, aka first and second sleep, if they've got many things on their mind. I know that sometimes my best ideas or figuring out solutions to a problem comes to me in the night or early morning right after waking, so perhaps this is a way some of us sort things out.SUMMARY: Good book if you're a lay person looking for medical information on sleep, sleep disorders and treatments.

“The Mystery of Sleep” is informative, entertaining, and, for some, maybe even life-saving!The author, Dr. Kryger, has a conversational, easy-to-follow style and a gentle, refreshing sense of humor. “Mystery” is a pleasant read: It's not a page-turner, but it's not boring either. It covers many aspects of sleep and sleep issues, including: why we sleep/how much we need, sleep problems and their treatments, the effects of mental/physical illness and medications on sleep, and what happens at a sleep clinic. Each chapter begins with a mystery that Dr. Kryger has encountered and ends with it's solution, adding some suspense and human interest to the information.I highly recommend “The Mysteries of Sleep.” I, personally, learned a few things that surprised me, and I became more aware of my sleep health. Sleep is, after all, a hugely important part of our lives as well as, believe it or not, a very interesting subject!

The subject of sleep in one that is of interest to all of us, especially in our hectic and troubled times. This book is tidily organized into four parts and 21 chapters. It is easy to peruse at random or to take the start to finish approach. It will be an excellent reference book for your library.I was surprised at how interesting the author, who is a doctor, was able to make each subject. There are of course medical terms and topics that are somewhat boring to me as a layperson, but there are many anecdotal and easily understood entries as well. Many of the facts about sleep surprised and reassured me; they will likely have the same effect on you.One of the topics to which I related well concerned the effect of sleep disorders on bedmates. (Chapter 7)Often the ill effects of the troubled one are as bad as or worse for those in the same bed or room. For me, the most enlightening of the four parts of the book was the third: “Can't sleep, can't stay awake.”This includes topics we are familiar with, such as “Insomnia,” Chapter 10, and some not so much, such as “Fear of Sleeping” in Chapter 14.I recommend this well-written and easily understood book to anyone who is invested in a better quality of sleep.
