Nice intro into avalanche safety. Easy to read, although the since behind snow pack is a little monotonous sometimes. Covers the "A to Z" of avalanche safety and covers most of the bases in a general manner.I would recommend this book if you're just getting into back-country activities, as well as a nice refresher.
I have taken many avalanche courses and have taught snow snow science and safety workshops. In this very clear and entertaining book Allen and Mike have summarized nearly everything I got from a 4-day Level II Avy course. The illustrations are awesome - they really show the concepts, and their humor helps you remember what you learned.I assign this book to every winter course I teach! My unsolicited advice for winter backcountry safety: buy and read this book, then take a good avalanche course. After that get out and practice what you learn with your adventure partners.
Great simple straightforward read. Visual aids and illustrations are super helpful. Great intro course book. Valuable information for anyone venturing into the backcountry.
As always these series of books have great info and drawings to go along with them. A wealth of info to add to your outdoor library
Super easy to read and probably saved my life while climbing in the whites. A must-read for those who can't work in a chance at formal education. With this book and some pit digging practice, I feel much more confident although it's definitely no substitute for experience and a formal class.

This book is an easy read but has great information about Avalanche awareness. I used it to get a bit more educated prior to a day on Silverton Mountain.
