Maryrose Wood has concluded her series with another delightful, adventurous, sometimes perilous tale.I do miss the lovely narration of Katherine Kellgren and was heartbroken to learn that she passed away. It is her voice I heard in my head as I read this book.
The first four books were amazing! The fifth book was a bit weak and slower, but this last book was absolutely horrible! The characters were written in such a way as to be unrecognizable as their former selves. Where the development of these characters had been so beautifully and thoroughly done in the first books of the series, this sixth book shows them being flat an lacking dimension. There were so many times during this book where the protagonists (Penelope Lumley, the children, Lord and Lady Ashton, etc.). said or did things that were unbelievably out of character--without any explanation. It was if Maryrose Wood had forgotten who these people were in the time between writing the first five books and this one.Furthermore, the climax and resolution of some of the biggest plots woven throughout the series were merely textbook illustrations of lazy 'deus ex machina'. For example, all of the sudden, characters just happen to be where they need to be to meet other characters--even when those places are several countries away! And the biggest mysteries of the series are explained away in one chapter in such a way is that is not consistent with most of what had taken place in prior books. Again, it was if the author had simply forgotten what had taken place earlier in her own story! The first four books of this series are amazing, and there was evidence in the fifth book that the series was losing steam. But this last book was such a resounding disappointment--as though someone new had tried to step in and fill the shoes of the author. The characters, the resolution of mysteries introduced to us five years ago, all fell flat. It would have been preferable if this sixth book had never been published, and we were to have been left with the story unresolved. In the future, if I ever re-read these books and introduce other children to them, I will not be including this book in the reading list.
I really enjoy the first five books in the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place series, so I was excited to finally read The Long-Lost Home. However, I was very disappointed in this book. Some of the mysteries introduced in previous books were never resolved, and several characters were extremely out of character. For instance, the protagonist, Penelope Lumley was honest, brave, and loyal. But in this book she started lying, stealing, and generally using trickery to get what she wanted. Certainly not Swanburne! Another character, the silly, self-centered Lady Constance suddenly became sweet and unselfish. The author gave no explanation for these changes. The story moved along very slowly and many far-fetched events happened along the way. (For example, the Incorrigible Children’s parents were not at all alarmed to find that their children had been raised by wolves. They did not seem to care very much when they were reunited with their children, whom they had been separated from for over five years. There was a fortune teller in some of the previous books, but whenever magic was mentioned, it was generally acknowledged to be made up. However, throughout this book several highly unrealistic things happened that never would have been brought up in any of the other books in the series. In short, The Long-Lost Home was upsettingly inconsistent with the other Incorrigible Children books.
Waited a long time for this last book and was so glad to finally read it! Looking forward to the next project, sad to say good bye to these characters...
This is the final book in the series about the Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place. The entire series is quite enjoyable and should be read in order to appreciate this book. The author has created some unique characters and placed them in situations that the reader might never imagine. Set in England in the Victorian time, there is a lot of history to be learned by reading this series. Enjoyable for the middle-school age children, it can also be enjoyed by parents, as well as for younger children who read on this level. Good job, Maryrose! I thoroughly enjoyed the entire series.
I couldn't wait to start reading the last installment of this precious series . I have enjoyed every minute of it, and now I'm terribly sad that it's over! I've become attached to Penelope, the children and the rest of the wonderful characters and their amazing adventures. I guess I'll just have to read the books again!I highly recommend these books
I discovered The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place last week ... Since that time I borrowed the first five ebooks from our library, and then bought this last one because our library does not yet have it. These books are filled with kindness and adventure and common sense ... A refreshing and delightful series with the last book being as wonderful as the first and wrapping up all loose ends nicely. I'm glad I discovered this series just as the last book was written, so that I could enjoy it all from beginning to end. It's made for a week of happy reading. 😊
A totally delightful grand finale to a superb series! Ms Wood holds both adult and child readers full and amused attention all the way through. I must read these with my grandkids.
