I absolutely ADORE this book! Suzanne Crowley takes the reader on the beautiful, bittersweet journey of Esme, a stubborn yet lovable young lady who is discovering who she truly is. Suzanne, the incredibly talented author, sent me a package including two signed copies which I gave to two of my students and we are reading it together as a book club! I am planning on hosting this awesome author at our school this year!!! :)
A delightful story of in-betweens with quirky-endearing characters, a small-town Texas setting, and enough local mysteries to keep a young girl “busy as a bee.†As she mourns the sudden loss of her beloved grandfather, Esme McCauley explores new and murky territory, both within herself and on her (somewhat , shall we say, dysfunctional) family’s struggling peach farm. In some situations, she finds more than she bargained for but in others she begins to understand that not everything that’s lost wants to be found. A fun and funny read--and a page-turner, to boot. I recommend Finding Esme to readers young and old (like me!).
Interesting book full of colorful characters about a girl dealing with kids and finding her true self while uncovering a set of dinosaur bones on her family’s property.
As a former teacher of reading, math and science, I liked that Esme doesn’t give up, no matter what! She’s a testimony for being triumphant through the uncertainty of her life: absent dad, grumpy grandma; don’t want to give it away! Esme follows her heart! Love!

All opinions are my own.Esme is twelve years old and lives on a peach farm in Texas with her stoic grandmother, her mother, who isn’t really aware of her or anything else, and her little brother. Until three years ago, her dad lived there, too, but then one day he simply said goodbye and never returned. Her grandpa also lived in their old farm house until three months ago when his heart simply stopped working. Esme desperately misses Paps and the love, acceptance and attention she only received from him. I found myself wanting to hug Esme for a very long time, to tell her she really will feel better one day and to allow her the freedom to just be a child, rather than the adult everyone expects her to be.This story is full of magic, mystery, adventure and family. I loved Esme’s resourcefulness and determination as she worked to solve her family’s financial crisis. I loved her fierce loyalty to her friends and family, including to her beloved dinosaur, Louella Goodbones, who she discovered on the farm. And finally, I loved her courage as she began to understand her gift of finding all things, as well as her ability to see ghosts.This is a good choice for students in grades 4-7 who are looking for a magical story, with a lot of love and adventure mixed in. It would be perfect for those students who are looking for a book “just like a Wendy Mass bookâ€! I recommend that it be added to both elementary and middle school libraries.

I'm just throwing that out there because not everyone enjoys quirky, southern turns of phrase. I, however, enjoyed it because it made the small town come to life and characters became people I know."Finding" has a big role in the story. Esme has an inkling of her grandma Bee's 'finding' gift. They can find things (and people) for their friends and family. Finding Esme is a coming-of-age story so Esme is forced to think about how everything that is lost doesn't necessarily need or want to be found. That's a tough lesson to learn especially for a young girl. Then there's Esme's big find...dinosaur bones on her family farm.I particularly enjoyed how Finding Esme had a timeless feel to the story. I initially thought it was a fairly contemporary story. There are mentions of phone booths and party lines that make you think it's a historical novel. Then we have a mention of a tea cup pig that people get as pets which makes me think the story is a bit more modern. All these elements work together and allow the reader to place the story anytime in history they'd like. This works well and will allow the story to hold up in time.All in all, Finding Esme is a charming Southern story about growing up. Perfect for young readers looking for magical realism, mysteries, and friendship.

Is her family’s magical intuition something that might save her farm? Does her father return for her? A story of such magical realism, I highly recommend for fans of Natalie Lloyd’s Snicker of Magic.
