I'd been following author Will Hines for many months on YouTube, Improv4Humans, etc., and finally got to see him live while taking an improv 101 class at Upright Citizens Brigade where he actively performs. Later I learned he wrote this book, and I feel like it needs to be required reading alongside the class textbook "UCB Manual".Whereas the UCB manual addresses the "how-to" of improv, what I liked most about Will's book is how it addresses common challenges happening *internally*. That is to say: all the anxiety and fears that are common for newbies like me. He offers encouragement and advice for those things, and breaks down complex concepts into simple thoughts. For example, when talking about "Top of Intelligence" (a confusing concept to me), "Top of intelligence means not making your characters dumber than they should be." Brilliant!And all that said, I do not think you need to have read the UCB manual in order to enjoy it... it works on its own.I'm hoping to do a book group, since the end of each chapter contains practice exercises to help put the concepts into action. Can't wait to try it out!
I've been doing long form improv for about three years. I do shows at least once a week. I hit a plateau where I wasn't really improving and so I bought all of the improv books. This was the first one I picked up. This book is great. I've taken pages of notes while reading it. It is incredibly thorough. It provides excellent explanations for complex concepts and helps adjust the readers thinking to really understand the craft at a higher level.
This book feels honest, helpful, and fun! Will Hines is a great improviser and I’ve seen him several times, I think that his book shows that, and also incorporates real examples and wisdom from other improv all-stars. A really great book for someone who’s done improv for a while, or who just took a class or read the UCB manual and wants to level up. Plus, it’s a really fun and job-stressful read and gives a lot of positive energy and advice for every level, from starting out to burnout.
A thoughtful book, filled with practical advice. I especially found the transcriptions of actual improv scenes helpful. Whereas the too-perfect example scenes in... well, one school's manual in particular, can make the whole undertaking feel like a daunting impossibility, the transcribed scenes show you how the sausage really gets made, how the greatest improvisers in the business work at finding the fun in their scenes. And in addition to specific, performance-related teachings, there's great advice about dealing with other performers and yourself, away from the stage. Anyone who's half-serious about improv should read this book.
Will's book is easy to follow and "teaches up", meaning he assumes you're already working with some level of improv familiarity. That said, his book is not overly complex, so that you feel confused or disengaged. I think it's the best improv text out there. Will's tone is kind, funny, friendly, and helpful. It has helped me as an improviser, and I will recommend it to my improv students.
This book is perfect for improvisers that are looking to sharpen their improv skills. In typical improv manuals, they layout how to improvise. Will does a great job laying WHAT you should be doing when improvising. His writing has helped me get out of my head and be able to concentrate on what is actually happening when I'm on stage. It's less of a textbook and more of a one-on-one coaching session, I think. I can't recommend this book enough!
My favorite improv book, and I have more than a few. Will’s way of explaining and breaking down ideas on how to approach improv are affectively different and hit home with me. I have purchased this book for several friends.
I heard about this book from one of Will Hines' guest appearances on Comedy Bang Bang. I purchased this as a gift, and after receiving it I am really glad I did. However, if you are a better person than me, you should probably buy it through the improvnonsense website. Thanks, byeeeeeeeeeeee!
