It’s 40 A.D. and Gaius, better known as Caligula, is on the imperial throne. Marcus Corvinus is minding his own business when the widow of a wealthy consul asks him to investigate her husband’s death. He had apparently died when a loose stone fell from a tower on his estate and landed on his head. Corvinus is disposed to believe it was an unfortunate accident, but when he visits the site he realizes that it was indeed a murder, Tracking down whodunit isn’t easy, especially after the em-peror sticks his nose into the business. Another good entry in this Roman mystery series.
A few loose ends in this one, nothing dramatic just random pieces that bug me, but loose ends isnt really fair because they are in fact written off to luck or the spirits. Always difficult to read stories where the end is literally history and unmovable. Here we know that Caligula is killed by his guards leaving the games in the end and Claudius becomes emperor. Can't say the specific games or date was in my head but ending was obvious. Wishart does do a good job of making it still have dramatic tension. I will miss Caligula though he was a crazy mean man but he was always a fun interaction. As usual the plot is simple murder uncovers nasty pile of woe/treason and tada Marcus uncovers the lot at great personal danger. This though took that formula to new heights
Corvinus is still enmeshed in treasons, strategems and spoils, in what is I think one of the best in the series. This time, Corvinus starts investigating the murder of a seemingly irrelevant old duffer; staid stuff. As he pulls more and more clues out of the situation, however, it becomes clear that he may have a particularly dangerous tiger by the tail. Exciting "what might have been" treatment of real events.
The book is an enjoyable read which we’s mystery, crime statistics, daily life in Rome and around Rome, and domestic life. Wishart is a really fun author to read.
Always a pleasure to read Covinus

Wishart has written an excellent series and has embroiled Marcus with some very powerful, very dangerous famous Romans.The supporting cast is strong and well-drawn.
This is an interesting and well written series of historical mysteries set in the era of ancient Rome. I recommend all the Marcus Corvinus mysteries and hope there are more to come.
