#19,830 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

If authors get paid by the word Mr. Bates must be rolling in dough. The basic story was pretty good. A group of young people off to explore a haunted island. Of course the men start snapping at each other in an attempt to impress. A murder/murders occur but our group do not hesitate to explore the area, in the dark of course. It would have made a decent story if the kernel of the story remained intact. The sexual situations were not necessary and the fact that, at least four of our protagonists, at various times, storm out of the buildings into the dark and rainy night.Despite being aware of a murder and a ghost wandering around. In real life all of these people would be dead.I gave it three stars because the writing was OK and the characters were well defined. But, I can only recommend it if you like to scan pages.

If you enjoy horror stories involving creepy places then you'll enjoy this tale and all the other stories written by Jeremy Bates. I am a fan of Bates, and all the books I've read by this author pull the reader into the suspense, drench you into the scene, and keep your heart pumping while emerging into the action that lurks around the next corner. In this story the protagonist is very human, vulnerable and in the end gains something. There is also another story thread that relates to the present story and the switching back and forth was smooth and placed in the appropriate moments on the timeline. The setting is the Island, a horrific place where childhood tragedy is glorified, as if that could ever help, and invokes the slanted surreal feeling to everything that happens at that place. The details are creepy. The pace of the action is intense (some fights, some sex) but the characters unfold slowly, peeling away layers of themselves the more you read on, until the deeper troubles and reality surfaces, and the reader will say, "yes, that makes sense". Something different in this story from other books written by Bates is the happy ending. But after the whirlwind of horrific cruelty that some of the characters had to endure, I think it is wise to give the guy a break.I recommend all the Jeremy Bates books, especially this one. But be forewarned - you'll never look at a doll in the same way again.

This is the 9th book I’ve read by Jeremy Bates and have just started Suicide Forest. I am a fan of his style of writing and have never been bored while reading one of his books. He does a terrific job of fleshing out the characters and describing the situations they become involved in. Some reviewers didn’t care for the fact that the story jumped from the 1950’s to the current time. I thought it was handled very adeptly and the transitions were smooth. A very sad part of the book was the story of poor, sweet, little Maria. My heart just broke when reading what happened to her.Spoil AlertI am not a fan of the Stephen King style of “supernatural” novels. Mr. Bates’ novels often have an element of the supernatural; however, by the end what seemed unreal or supernatural to the characters ends up being explained very realistically. These twists are what make his novels so interesting to me.

I've read three of his books & the characters are the same: the protagonist is a very tall, fit male with a tendency for fisticuffs with another male character who is the story's a-hole. Foreign female hottie who had a thing for the very tall male. Very tall male's girlfriend is a total jerk or acts like one to get back at VTM. However, the books have a good, "explainable" twist for each scariest place location. My advice to the author: Come up with new characters.

Lots of suspense, kept me guessing right to the end. I really enjoyed the setting of the book in Mexico in a real place called Island of the Dolls as it is a place that I had never at this stage read a book set in that environment. I really enjoyed the characters and the ride that the author took me on. I could not wait to finish so stayed up reading it into the early hours of the morning.Just about to download another of his books.

I have loved the author's World's Scariest Place series since he first started with Suicide Forest. His new book Island of the Dolls is a great piece of work that kept me guessing the whole way through. His first 3 books in the series had a lot of similarities as far as the storyline (although I still feel they're very good and all worth a read).I've spoken to Jeremy Bates online, and found that while he's never actually visited these places he writes about, he does a lot of research on them. I'm here to say that that's an understatement! I was pleasantly surprised to find that a lot of the things he describes in the book about the island, you can easily google photos of those things. His description is spot-on. I hope he writes another in the series soon as I look forward to reading the next.

The premise of the story was interesting to me and the shock value was good but there was just too many loose ends at the end of the book . There were too many unanswered questions (I wont list them here for fear of ruining the story) . The ending was also poor to me. It went in a direction that was completely unsupported by the story. I understood the story and I wanted to like it, but when push came to shove I just didn't like it.

The last in this series, Helltown, sucked, but this one was really good. I'm realizing that some of this author's characters are a bit cliche, but all in all I like this series, and this story is one of the more interesting. The first , Suicide Forest, is still my favourite. As always, the main guy is tall, has some sort of tragic past, and has lady troubles. I hated his girl, Pita, and wanted her to die off! His girlfriends are always awful and then there is always a second girl, who is always foreign, and more likeable. She always speaks oddly and repeats his name a lot. This one has a kid thrown in the mix. Oh, and there is always a guy that doesnt get along with said main character. I'm onto the next.
